Anatomy of the Skull

Get Adobe Flash player

An interactive Flash diagram of the human skull. The skull protects the brain, houses the special sense organs (sight, smell, taste, hearing), and gives shape to the face—it is composed of 22 bones, all of which are fused with fibrous joints  except for the mandible, which is connected by a hinge joint that allows it to drop for eating and speaking. There are also air-filled spaces called sinuses in some of the bones near the nasal cavity, reducing the weight of the skull and adding resonance to the voice. Roll over specific segments of the skull in front or side view for their names, or label the diagram with virtual paint and drawing tools.
