Help for your child to cope with negative emotions

AboutKidsHealth has developed a new game for children aged seven to 12 to help them understand and cope with difficult emotions such as sadness or anger. Called Monarch's Mission, the game is being launched to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on September 10.

With a space explorer theme, the game enables children to learn about emotions as they meet new alien friends on different planets. Children can choose their own character and learn how to:

  • identify negative emotions
  • understand the triggers, or causes, of those emotions
  • figure out how to cope with negative emotions before they become too powerful.

We have also produced guidelines for parents and other adults about using a "feelings list" and helping a child make the link between their emotions, thoughts and behaviour.
