What is a Turbuhaler?

A Turbuhaler is a white cylinder with a coloured base. It is used to deliver medicines in powder form. It has a dose counter window so you can see when it is nearly empty.

This device is appropriate for children over 10 years old. It may be difficult for younger children to have enough flow to get the medicine into the lungs.

How to use the Turbuhaler

Your child can follow these 4 steps when taking medicine with a Turbuhaler.

Step 1: Open the Turbuhaler

Unscrew the white cover and take it off the Turbuhaler.

Step 2: Get the medicine ready

  • Hold the Turbuhaler with the mouthpiece pointing up.
  • Hold the Turbuhaler in one hand and twist the coloured bottom of the Turbuhaler with the other hand. Twist it as far to the right as it will go, then twist to the left until you hear a click. The click means that the medicine is ready.

Make sure you do not lose the medicine. You will lose the medicine:

  • if you shake the Turbuhaler after hearing the click
  • if you turn the Turbuhaler upside down after hearing the click
  • if you drop the Turbuhaler after hearing the click
  • if you blow into the Turbuhaler after hearing the click

If you lose the medicine, do Step 2 again.

Step 3: Take the medicine

  • Stand or sit up straight.
  • Breathe out.
  • Put the mouthpiece between your teeth, then wrap your lips around the mouthpiece tightly so that no air can get out.
  • Tilt your head back a little bit.
  • Breathe in as fast and as deeply as you can.

  • Take the Turbuhaler out of your mouth.
  • Hold your breath until you have counted to 10 very slowly.
  • Breathe out very slowly through your mouth, away from the Turbuhaler.

Repeat Steps 2 to 3 if you need to take more puffs.

How do you know how much medicine is left in your Turbuhaler?

There are about 20 doses left in your Turbuhaler when the red mark first shows in the window on the side of the Turbuhaler. You need to get a new one from your pharmacy as soon as possible when you see this line. This means you will have a new one ready when the old one runs out. The Turbuhaler is empty when the red mark reaches the bottom of the window.

You cannot tell if the Turbuhaler is empty by shaking it. The sound you hear is the powder that keeps the medicine dry, and not the medicine itself.

Some Turbuhalers have counters that count backwards with each dose.

How to clean your Turbuhaler

  • Wipe off the mouthpiece with a dry tissue after use.
  • Never use any liquid to clean the Turbuhaler.
  • If powder sticks in the hole, try to brush it out.
