Researchers continue to work on finding new treatments for asthma and new ways of delivering existing medicines.
The immune system produces a substance called IgE when the body encounters an allergen. IgE causes asthma to worsen. Omalizumab is a medicine that helps to block IgE in the body, which can help prevent asthma episodes. It is given as series of injections.
Omalizumab may be an effective medicine for adults and children 12 years and older who have severe allergies and whose asthma is not well controlled by inhaled steroids.
