The Epilepsy Health Care Team

If a child’s epilepsy is mild and well controlled, he will probably be able to continue seeing his usual doctor for his care. If his epilepsy is more complex or difficult to control, though, he and his family may benefit from working with an experienced epilepsy health care team. Each professional in this group brings unique experience and expertise to the care of the child or teen and the support of the family. At the centre of any team, however, are the child and his family, because care must be tailored to meet their individual needs. The “core” team should also include:

  • a neurologist or paediatrician
  • a nurse

Members of the “extended” team, in addition to other family members, include:

  • the family practitioner or paediatrician
  • the pharmacist
  • school personnel
  • recreation workers
  • babysitters

In some cases, depending on the severity of your child’s epilepsy and what treatment he requires, your team may also include:

  • a neurosurgeon
  • a neuropsychologist
  • a psychiatrist
  • a clinical psychologist
  • a dietician
  • a special education teacher
  • a social worker or counsellor
