Living with epilepsy involves much more than simply trying to manage seizures. Children with epilepsy often face challenges that other children do not. Families can find living with epilepsy a very stressful experience. This section discusses many issues related to epilepsy, including:

  • day-to-day seizure safety, including tips on ensuring a safe home and making sure your child is safe outside the home
  • epilepsy and your child’s health, including general health, visits to the epilepsy clinic, and understanding and avoiding seizure triggers
  • coping with epilepsy as a family, including advice for you, your child with epilepsy, your spouse, and your other children
  • your child’s quality of life with epilepsy, including potential issues related to his physical health, learning and language, behaviour, emotional life, and social adaptation
  • the balance between independence and safety: how to let your child take the necessary steps toward being more autonomous
  • issues related to school, including how epilepsy can affect learning, assessing your child’s needs, advocating for your child, missed school days due to seizures or clinic visits, and field trips
  • leisure and recreation, including travel, sports, and camp
  • how epilepsy affects children at specific stages of growth and development
