Other Treatments for Epilepsy

Medication is the most common treatments for epilepsy and usually the first one tried. However, other treatments have proven themselves useful in reducing seizures and are now formally included in the options for treating epilepsy:

  • The ketogenic diet is a special, restrictive diet that is high in fats. It must be individually calculated and professionally monitored.

  • Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) uses an implantable device that delivers intermittent electrical stimulation to the vagus nerve to help control seizures.
