Since oxygenation takes place in the womb via the placenta, the fetal heart does not need to pump blood to the lungs. Once a baby is born and takes their first breath, the blood vessels in the lung open up and the heart pumps blood into the lungs.

With this rapid change from womb to world, premature babies are at risk for several heart complications. Their frequency and severity is related to how premature the baby is. As is generally the case with premature babies, the more immature a baby is, the more at risk they are for heart problems and the more likely it is that these problems will be severe.

More information

Heart conditions

Treatment of heart conditions

Ongoing care of heart conditions

Diagnosis of heart conditions in premature babies
