This might include taking your teen’s blood pressure, obtaining their weight, and examining their heart and lungs.

You and your teen will meet the anaesthetist who will be looking after your teen during the surgery. The anaesthetist will be giving your teen the anaesthesia (sleep medicine). The anaesthetist will also monitor your teen during surgery. The anaesthesia may be given by either a mask or a needle. Both methods are equally effective and work very fast.

You and your teen will also meet the nurse who will be looking after your teen in the operating room. Once all questions have been asked and answered, your teen will walk to the operating room with the anaesthetist and nurse.

At this point, you may go to the waiting room. You may ask the surgeon or nurse to provide you with updates during the surgery. Your surgeon may be able to give you an idea of when the surgery will be finished. If you are unable to stay in hospital, please provide the nurse with a number at which you can be reached. When the surgery is over, your teen’s surgeon or a member of the surgical team will come and talk to you.
https://assets.aboutkidshealth.ca/akhassets/OrthopaedicCheckin_EN.jpgArriving at the hospital for scoliosis surgery
