Diagnostic tests will be used to see if your child has a brain tumour. A sample of tissue will be taken during surgery to confirm the diagnosis.

Key points

Diagnostic testing is done to determine if your child's symptoms are being caused by a brain tumour.

Staging will be done at diagnosis to see if the ependymoma has spread.

Doctors and other medical professionals will use well-established diagnostic tests to see if a brain tumour is causing your child’s symptoms. These tests will include a physical examination, and brain scans such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computerized tomography, which will identify the presence of a tumour. A sample of tissue will be taken at the time of surgery to confirm the diagnosis. This small piece of tumour will be removed and sent to a doctor called a pathologist. She will look at the tumour under a microscope to learn the exact type of tumour.

Ependymoma (Supratentorial) MRI

Ependymoma (Infratentorial) MRI

Staging

In rare cases, an ependymoma can spread. Before starting any treatment, the doctor will first want to know if there are any other tumours in the brain or spine. For this reason, a number of tests are done at diagnosis to see if the cells have spread. This is called staging. These tests include an MRI of the spine, and studies of cells in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Sometimes tumours can spread.

Ependymomas are classified according to grade. In the brain, ependymomas are either grade 2 or 3. Grade 2 ependymomas are also called benign. Grade 3 ependymomas are also called malignant. However, the grading system is not very reliable and there is no agreement between different institutions on how to grade ependymomas. Also, the behaviour of the ependymoma does not necessarily match the grading. Scientists are working to develop a better classification system.

More information

Ependymomas

Treatment of Ependymomas

Recurrence of Ependymomas
