Learn how to recognize life-threatening bleeding, prevent shock and stop severe bleeds.

Key points

  • If bleeding does not stop on its own, act quickly to prevent too much blood loss and shock.
  • Signs of shock include pallor (unusual paleness or loss of colour); cool, clammy skin; sweating; fast breathing; and loss of consciousness or confusion. 
  • Life-threatening bleeding is heavy and continuous, soaks through clothing or bandages, and pools on the ground.
  • Call 911 right away if the person bleeding is showing any signs of shock or life-threatening bleeding.
  • Moderate bleeding can be treated by encouraging rest, elevating the wound, applying direct pressure and leaving any embedded objects in the wound.
  • You can respond to a severe bleeding situation by using Stop the Bleed techniques including applying direct pressure, packing the wound and using a tourniquet.
