Physiotherapy after heart surgery

Following heart surgery, your child will need to exercise to keep their lungs clear. Read how deep breathing, splinted coughing and moving will help.

Key points

  • A physiotherapist may meet with you and your child before your child has heart surgery. The physiotherapist may show you how to do the exercises and give you equipment to practice with. Please bring the equipment back on the day of the operation.
  • As soon as possible after heart surgery, your child will need to start the exercises.
  • If your child needs extra help while in hospital, the physiotherapist will come and work with your child at the request of the attending physician or nurse practitioner.
