Learn about the medications, interventions and surgeries used to manage posterior urethral valves in children.

Key points

  • There are different types of surgeries that can address posterior urethral valves (PUV), a blockage in the urethra. Your child’s health-care team will consider various factors to decide which surgery is best for your child.
  • Even after the blockage is addressed, your child may have problems with bladder and kidney function. These may be able to be managed with medications and, sometimes catheters to help empty the bladder.
  • Your child may need additional surgeries if they have persistent blockage in the urethra, worsening hydronephrosis (swelling of the kidneys), development of urinary tract infections or rising creatinine (a waste product in the blood). Surgery can also help improve bladder function and reduce pee accidents.
