Learn about the cow’s milk protein–free diet to treat non-IgE-mediated cow’s milk allergy.

Key points

  • If your child has non-IgE-mediated cow’s milk allergy (CMA), they will need to follow a cow’s milk protein–free diet.
  • If you are breastfeeding or expressing breast milk for an infant diagnosed with non-IgE-mediated CMA, you may need to remove cow’s milk proteins (CMPs) from your diet as well.
  • The CMP-free diet involves removing all sources of CMPs from your or your child’s diet. This includes more obvious sources of CMPs, such as milk, cheese and yogurt, and less obvious sources, such as cereals, dressings and other processed foods.
  • It is important to always read food, drink and medication labels for sources of CMPs.
  • Talk to your child’s health-care provider about how to get enough calcium, vitamin D and protein when following a CMP-free diet.
