Flexible flatfeet is a common condition that represents a normal foot type and does not typically need treatment. Learn more about this condition and how to manage it.

Key points

  • Flexible flatfeet are common. Nearly all infants, most children under 5 years of age and 25% of adults are flatfooted. This is a normal type of foot shape.
  • Most people with flatfeet do not experience pain, even though their feet might look very flat.
  • Very few flatfeet need surgery, and most are “flexible”. This means the arch forms when you go on your toes.
  • Pain from flexible flatfeet is usually related to calf muscles and can often be relieved with regular stretching of the calf muscles. Some people may also get relief from supportive, soft off-the-shelf insoles and a consistent course of physiotherapy with a home exercise program.
