Find out how a skin biopsy is used to diagnose a change or growth on the skin.

Key points

  • A biopsy involves removing a small piece of skin to help diagnose the cause of skin changes.
  • A health-care provider may do a punch, an excisional or a shave biopsy, depending on what your child needs.
  • After a biopsy, the skin may sometimes be closed with stitches. Usually, ointment and a bandage will be applied.
  • Call your child’s health-care provider or go to your nearest Emergency Department if your child has a fever, unusual bleeding, swelling or discharge during the first 48 hours after their biopsy.
