Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic condition. Learn what causes it, and how it is diagnosed and treated.

Key points

  • TSC is a genetic disorder that causes the growth of non-cancerous (benign) tumours in many different parts of the body.
  • Common symptoms of TSC include seizures, intellectual disability, behavioural problems, skin abnormalities, and eye problems.
  • TSC is caused by variations in either of two genes, TSC1 or TSC2.
  • Most cases of TSC are caused by new gene variations; however, in some cases, TSC can be inherited from a parent who carries the gene variant.
  • Diagnosis of TSC can include physical examinations, imaging testing and genetic testing.
  • Although there is no cure for TSC, symptoms can be treated and managed with the help of various health-care specialists.
