Complete the weekly assignment to help you practise what you learned in the Communication module of the iCanCope with Sickle Cell Pain program.

Key points

  • In this module, you learned strategies to help you communicate with your teen and with health-care providers, teachers and other school staff.
  • This week, practise what you learned by identifying any communication barriers you may have with your teen, working on increasing positive interactions and talking with your teen about whether a school plan would be helpful. Then, return to this page to reflect on the week by answering the assignment review questions.

Your weekly assignment

Over the next week, see if you can identify any communication barriers (such as lecturing, giving mixed messages or getting the last word) with your teen.

Work on increasing positive interactions with your teen. This might include scheduling a regular time to do a fun activity together or working on keeping the conversation more positive.

Also, talk with your teen about whether it would be helpful to have a school plan. If you both decide it would be helpful, set up a meeting with your teen’s school.

Assignment review

1. What communication barriers with your teen did you identify (if any)?

2. What was a fun positive interaction you had with your teen this week?

3. Did you discuss a school plan with your teen? What did you decide to do?
