Treatment of muscle spasms
Most muscle spasms resolve on their own. Simple stretching and massaging can help treat a muscle spasm. If your child gets a cramp in the calf muscle, ask them to straighten their leg and flex their foot.
You can also switch back and forth between cold compresses and warm heating pads on the affected muscle area. These treatments will usually calm the cramping after a few minutes to an hour.
Children who have muscle spasms after exercise or while outside in hot, humid temperatures should be encouraged to drink lots of fluid to rehydrate.
Rest and hydrate
Heat-related illnesses are often indicated by muscle spasms, along with weakness, nausea and vomiting. If your child has any of these symptoms, have them rest, cool off and drink.
