Key points

  • If the CVL is not being used each day, the heparin flush will be done every 24 hours.
  • A nurse will teach you how to take care of your child’s CVL, including what to do if it breaks or the cap falls off.
  • Keep the CVL and neck site dry at all times, and leave the dressings in place.
  • Give your child acetaminophen for pain.
  • Avoid major physical activity for two weeks.
  • Your child should not swim at any time.
