Key points

  • Vein of Galen malformations (VOGMs) are a type of brain vascular malformation that occur in the early stages of fetal development. It is formed by abnormal connections of arteries to veins in the developing fetus.
  • The cause of VOGMs is not fully known. They occur during the early development of the fetus, usually during the first trimester.
  • The high-pressure blood flow in the malformation can lead to significant problems including     congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, significant brain injury, and hydrocephalus.
  • Newborns with untreated VOGMs usually experience very poor outcomes, including multiorgan failure and the high likelihood of death
  • A baby with VOGM requires care at a highly experienced pediatric neurovascular centre, and referral to a high-risk delivery care centre should be initiated as soon as possible.
